Nurses and Healthcare Professionals Applaud Action of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors to End Relationship with Private For-Profit Corporation
Milwaukee, WI--“Thanks to Chairman Theodore Lipscomb and the entire County Board for realizing the need to end the relationship with these for-profit corporations that care more about profit than the health of the community. It is members of our community that reside in the correctional system and they deserve quality healthcare services--in fact it is their human right,” said Candice Owley, President of the Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals.
If we as a community put as much effort into funding and staffing these services as we spend putting people into jails and prisons, we would transform health outcomes in Milwaukee County.
This is a wonderful first step towards regaining quality healthcare and accountability for taxpayer dollars. By removing a profit motive from these services, Milwaukee County can focus on quality healthcare not a bottom line.
In addition to fully funding and staffing these services, the next step is guaranteeing a voice for nurses on the job. Had these processes existed within Armor, it could have saved lives. Let’s never repeat the history of what happened.
