Winning a Promotion at NDSU: Reflections from Prof. Brenda Hall

Professor Brenda Hall applied for tenure and promotion to full professor in spring of 2011. She met all standards in place and the approval of the then-provost. However, when a new provost was hired, her decision was reversed, based on numerous factual errors. NDPEA went to work, appealing the decision. This is the story of our member's fight to win the promotion she had clearly earned, and stand up for the rights of all the faculty on the campus of North Dakota State University.

National Federation of Nurses to Affiliate with AFT

AFT Healthcare-Maryland president Debra Perry reports that the leaders of two labor organizations representing healthcare professionals announced on February14 that they have approved an affiliation agreement that will bring 34,000 registered nurses into the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the largest union of professionals in the AFL-CIO.

MPEC Seeks Answers on DHCD Move

During AFT-Maryland’s Lobby Night, February 11, members of the Maryland Professional Employees Council (MPEC) spoke to delegates about the proposed move of the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) from Crownsville to Prince Georges County.

In a meeting with Delegate Ron George (R-Anne Arundel County) MPEC member Bill Walling asked specifically about the status of the DHCD move. Delegate George told the MPEC delegation that he had filed a Public Information Act request (PIA) to determine the status of the relocation of DHCD.

Negotiations Update February 19, 2013

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The one year “anniversary” of the start of negotiations has arrived. I hate to think of how many trees we’ve used up, with our multiple drafts of proposals, counter proposals, tentative-tentative agreements and volumes of minutes.  All that paper represents a lot of thinking, reflection, consideration…and in the near future, we hope, a contract worthy of ratification.
