The DFT and the DPS reached a settlement agreement [Download here] which resolved a number of disputes -- one of which was the lawsuit challenging the flawed evaluation, layoff, and recall procedures used by DPS. Approximately 422 teachers were laid off as a result of those flawed procedures, which were neither negotiated nor agreed to by the DFT.
Some of the highlights of the settlement are as follows:
On April 2, 2013, the Washington State Supreme Court in the case of Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA) v. Sacred Heart Medical Center (SHMC), reaffirmed its earlier unanimous decision upholding nurses’ statutory rights to be paid overtime when their duties prevent them from taking a rest period. Sacred Heart Medical Center’s motion for reconsideration of the Court’s October 25, 2012 (No. 86563-9,10/25/12) decision was denied, bringing an end to the long, hard-fought battle of the nurses for justice and protection of patient safety.
SCRANTON (April 4, 2013) – AFTPA Executive Vice President Rosemary Boland testified before the House Democratic Policy Committee on school safety, saying it’s impossible to discuss school safety without addressing school funding issues.
PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA (April 12, 2013) -- Higher education union leaders from across Pennsylvania met last weekend to discuss higher education funding, the difficulty of negotiating contracts in the current political and economic climate, rising college student debt and other issues at the annual AFT Pennsylvania-PSEA Higher Education Coalition Conference.
Last nights Canidate forum was very informitive. Chapter Secretary Pamela Burdett distributed questionaires to all the canidates present and we are looking forward to lerning even more about the canidates.
