Write a Letter: A Safe Plan for Salem's Schools

The Salem Teachers Union, and many members of our community, are deeply concerned about returning Salem's students back to the school buildings before the safest possible environment can be created. In the meantime, our district must create a robust remote learning plan to start the 2020-2021 school year and pay particular attention to engaging the students who were left behind during last Spring's school closures.

Please join us in requesting that the Mayor, School Committee, and Superintendent pursue a thoughtful and effective remote learning model for the beginning of the school year.

Aftermath of Yesterday's Storm

If you are a teleworker today and you are unable to work from home b/c you don't have power at home, please contact your supervisor before simply going into the office.  Most agencies do NOT want hordes of people descending upon the building on a single day.  If your supervisor gives you the green light to come into the office, then feel free to do so.  If you contact your supervisor then you should be considered "on-the-clock" until you get a determination.   Also, (although untested), we believe travel time to the agency would count as time worked.  If you wish to use a PL/Vac time, you s

Right to Know Request and Appeal Withdrawn

On June 17, 2020, the Office of Administration sent you a notice about a Right to Know Law request and appeal filed by Ben Straka of the Freedom Foundation, in which he was seeking the middle names and day and month of birth for commonwealth employees.

Mr. Straka withdrew his appeal (OOR AP#2020-0571) in the Office of Open Records. As a result, the Office of Administration’s denial of employee middle names and day and month of birth will stand, and no further action is required to prevent the disclosure of this information to Mr. Straka.

Chapter Chair's Message

One of the disadvantages of the Pandemic is that we, your Executive Board, have not been able to conduct membership meetings on campus. Consequently, we have begun conducting the meetings via Zoom.

In the past month, we conducted two Zoom membership meetings and were able to talk about the history of our bargaining unit along with the history of our negotiations as well as the current status including some of the problems we have been experiencing at the bargaining table.

The meetings also gave members an opportunity to ask questions and express concerns. We encourage members to participate in this way for now as we will be scheduling these meetings on a regular basis until the College resumes normal in-person operations.
