Why I Want A Union: Eric Hahn

Art Department - Allegheny Campus
“I believe that a union of college faculty has multiple benefits, not only for those who teach but also for students and the entire school. High rates of job turnover among part time faculty create chaos for administration as well as students. The uncertainty of steady employment discourages many highly qualified instructors from seeking jobs here. A unified voice of those on the front lines of education would greatly improve the discourse between the decision makers and the people who truly work with the students in the classroom.”
Why We Want A Union
The reasons why adjuncts at CCAC want a union are as diverse as the adjuncts themselves. Please take a look at our "Why We Want A Union" piece to see why adjunct faculty at CCAC are so committed to forming a unon.
CCAC Adjuncts File Authorization Cards
After months of hard work, the adjunct faculty at the Community College of Allegheny County have filed authorization cards with the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board. The authorization cards, which were signed in by adjuncts in every department and campus, demonstrate the huge level of support or a union of adjuncts at CCAC.
Filing the authorization cards is a huge step in the process for forming a union, but it certainly isn't the last. There is a lot of hard work left to be done. Contact an organizer or organizing committee member to find out how you can help make the union a reality! Or, you can e-mail ccacadjuncts@gmail.com for more information.
Rally for Public Education
Respect public education. That was the message a dozen local speakers shared to a packed house including Sen. Seward and Assemblyman Lopez on March 12. Public education is a cornerstone of our communities and democracy. Gov. Cuomo's gimmicks disguised as reforms will hurt public schools by taking away local control, under funding, and over testing. We were able to hear how to best support public education from professional educators, parents, and students themselves.
